C5. What is the best action you, your community, and / or regional tourism development organizations could take to assist your community in improving its tourism economy?
Open-ended comments are summarized below by Adirondack community area.
Indian Lake –Blue Mtn Lake
Advertising for the winter in the south and advertising for the summer.
Advertising-night recreation-activities for children. And rental of recreation equipment.
Assist in local Chamber of Commerce.
Attracting more visitors, better advertising and better local services-quality restaurants.
Clean up town appearance and create small niche shops. Also create town-sponsored activities.
Create an atmosphere so people will want to return more than once.
Develop accommodations
Education in customer service. Many visitors find local residents rude and unhelpful but I think they just lack social skills and training in the importance of good customer service.
Expand Gore Mt. With quad detachable lift and let the skiers spend their money in the hamlet of North Creek. Lake Placid is an excellent example.
Have all chambers and tourism boards under one umbrella-too much over lap.
Have clean friendly accommodations and places to eat and shop. Make tourism more attractive (Blue Mt. Lake)
Help develop the means to contact the people and tell them what's available
Improve CURRENT businesses.
Increase number of cabins for rentals and increase number of stores for tourists.
Indian Lakers should get their heads out of the sand and do some basic, down to earth work! Get with it!
Institute a private regional marketing org. that would work with / and pull together all local and regional efforts to save money, eliminate duplication and be more responsive and effective.
Keep roads trails and areas litter free. Improve outdoor "House-keeping"-show our LOVE for the land.
Learn to put petty differences and personal baggage aside to work together towards common goals.
More motels, restaurants and activities.
Obtain public transportation form Albany and Utica through Old Forge, Blue Mt. Lake, Long Lake, Tupper Lake into Saranac.
Offer year round lodging and restaurants to bring in Fall and Spring tourists.
Promote eco-tourism related activities to active families.
Statewide, out of state and Canadian tourism marketing campaigns to encourage these folks to think of the Adirondacks as a great destination.
Inlet-Raquette Lake
Advertise, promote natural resources.
Advertise.
Be friendlier with tourists and give them a little more leeway to enjoy their vacation.
Market the area better.

Mountain bike and bike pathways.
NY Charges too much for advertising. Combined low cost advertising.
Open the closed businesses in our business district.
Promoting more year-round business, perhaps creating new attractions or events in winter, spring and fall.
Provide indoor recreation for bad weather day and nights.

Television ads-"Back to nature'.
We have taken action in developing a survey (community 2000) and looking at strengths/weakness in area for tourism.
Work together, get the big picture and plan for the future and a market outside the area.
Long Lake-Newcomb

Being able to handle the influx of people.
Define improve.
Develop a winter plan. Connect local town with trails for snowmobiles, skies and snowshoes.
Get school year put back to start after Labor day and end by June 15th.
Get state agencies or departments to work with us, not against us.
Have post office deliver mail that is not 100% correctly addressed. We have had new business letters returned because of a slight variation in the address. This is true of others in Long lake.
Increase budget and find new director of tourism.
Make it more accessible-Walking trails near lakes and accessible snowmobile trails.
Making our community year-round for tourism.
More advertising and events.
More international advertising.
Open up Whitney park to bicycles.
Paint homes, plant flowers, have pride in the community. Involve tourists in community events. Have local color.

Take local government and county government out of the economic development business. They are a curse and were not elected to do this stuff.
North Creek-Johnsburg
Better publicity to our smaller quality areas. There is more to or area then Lake George and Lake Placid area.
Bring all Adirondack Park marketing efforts together.
Collective marketing of attractions and customer service training.
Control motor boating/jet skiing on small lakes. Maintain quiet wilderness . Housing away from noise, gas and odor.
Get Gore Mt. Out of ORDA's hands.

I like it just like it is (where I live) on a regional level. A good web site would be great.
Improving and connecting local snowmobile trails to other towns and systems
Increase information available through the Internet.
Major one for me would be trails for snowmobiling and stock more fish in surrounding lakes. Lower hunting licenses.
Organize "Big New York" campaign, more promotion from the state.

Advertise and promote. Get quality tourists-people with good income.

Better advertisement for those outside the town proper area.
Better marketing statewide and in Northeast, Mid-Atlantic states as well as Florida.
Collaborative planning with Central ADK. RR, boat tours and Arts Center/Old Forge.
Continue developing all forms of linear recreation and insist on quality.
Develop a planning committee to assess improving the ski mountain as a family vacation within the community.
Develop new attractions and loosen up on DEC/APA regulations.
Development and implementation of a strong state wide multi use trail system for snowmobiles, ATV's.
Encourage all residents to recognize that tourism is our economy and all residents (including retirees) need to be welcoming and "positive" to visitors.
Enforcement of navigation laws re: speed near shorelines, nearness to other boats.
Flood the market with advertising and relax APA control on expansion.
Get rid of the APA! Allow staged use of natural resources. Follow the federal model- i.e. Smokey Mountains.
Having more/similar business work together not just side by side.

Lower the NYS sales tax. Advertise in places outside of 100-mile radius (people in Lake Placid don't even know where we are in the Adirondacks.
Make the town supervisor and town board realize the value of tourism.
Make tourists aware of the nature the park offers. Yet we still give them the convenience of low key city access.
More funding for Inlet CAA Chamber of Commerce.
More money for advertising.
More special events-fall , spring, and mid-week-golf tournaments, big name concerts etc.
Need Director of Tourism for C.A.A.
NYS could help us more, cannot find out anything about Old Forge from state tourism info.
Opening a snowmobile/ATV trail between Thendara and Brandrith on state land instead of issuing tickets.
Recognize tourism as an asset and address the public as serious need for our economic survival
Save the historic buildings before we have no character.

This should be a joint effort and not left in the hands of individual people.

Star Lake-Cranberry Lake-Wanakena
More overnight accommodations. 2-Development of snow mobile trail from Inlet to Star Lake. 3-Organized healthy events ( possibly national) such as bike races, canoe races, etc, brought to the area.
Anything would be an improvement.
Develop more accommodations and find employees for the existing businesses.
Enlarge Hamlet area so more services and building lots are made available to support tourism and support services.
Legislation to protect landowners from legal action, so they won't be so reluctant to give permission to access.
Promote snowmobiling-access to state lands and the trails on these lands.
Stability of Newton Falls Paper and reopen the Old J&L location-job jobs. Clean up Main Street.
The Adirondacks west of Tupper Lake are forgotten and not promoted by the TPA's and other tourism agencies. We should either become separate with a separate identity or be properly included.
Tupper Lake-Upper Saranac Lake
Adirondack Park regional marketing-focus on unique aspects lake, mountains, architecture and building styles, great camps and local crafts.
Advertise.
Advertise-promote more of what we have "nature".
Advertising in city areas outside the Blue Line, give tax breaks and loan incentives to attract development.
All working together with advertising and a Chamber of Commerce.
Beautification is all a tourist town needs to increase the potential of the community. This will make the area more appealing to the average tourist. No tourist wants to stop if there is garbage in the streets.
Clean up the area, it makes it more appealing.
Clean up the area, sweep roads, mow along roads, improve the eye-sore properties.
Community-Clean , beautify, take pride, develop municipal park and museum. State-Set up viewing station for birds, scenic viewing areas and help locals develop business.

Distinguish New York from New York City. It is a unique problem and maybe could be exploited in advertising.
Do something about the APA.
Endeavoring to make our town an attractive place to visit-instead of the run down houses that are in our community.
Get our downtown area cleaned up and repaired
Get rid of the stupid police that hassle the "out-of-towners".
Get the State to designate less wilderness lands. Get them to develop more trails and campsites. Get Funding to develop boat slips and boat launching sites in town. Better stocking programs and promotion of fishing and hunting.

Help us to find a private investor for a year round lumberjack theme park, past and present, forest management and tech. With rides and demos. Both educational and fun , we have 100 acres of land to lease long term-free

Improve Internet access and knowledge of how to use the Internet to its full potential.
Improve the aesthetics of the community. Fix up Main St. and provide more parking.
Just to receive help as others receive it. Because of our voting number, we are not worthy of too much attention.
Keeping the town character as it has been for years and years that’s why people come here.

Promote tourism opportunities by state and regional organizations by making the aware that "Tupper Lake" exists- not just Lake Placid, Lake George, Long Lake and Old Forge.
Promote tourism that brings money into the communities like ATV trails, snowmobiling, Mtn. Biking, hunting, fishing and skiing. Spend less on sports that do little for business, canoeing and hiking.

Put an amusement park in and attract all ages! Also develop fully our main water front assets in the center of town. The APA is ruining our lives!!
Rebuild Main St. and try to get some semblance of zoning (burned out buildings can be up for years). Get rid of low cost housing.

We need a regional advertising approach. Ads for the Adirondacks only on a national/international basis.
Who says we really want more tourism. Perhaps we'd like a different industry to move in, like say, computer professional software.
Zoning and parking will increase tourist business.
